Notes and Editorial Reviews
Hear the opening concert of Carnegie Hall's new season with a gala performance of Carl Orff's lusty, rowdy masterpiece, featuring the CSO and music director Riccardo Muti. Editor's note on Oct. NPR cannot allow such work to stand. But a news organization should not hide its mistakes. We have moved the material that was on this page to another location , highlighted the words and phrases that were at issue and added links to show where the material was originally published. NPR's policy on plagiarism is clear : It is unacceptable.
Photo: Todd Rosenberg. Carl Orff is remembered almost exclusively for his sprawling opus, a profane oratorio of sorts inspired by medieval monastic texts that celebrate all the country pleasures of drink, sex and gluttony. Yet for all its lusty fervor and boisterous choruses, Carmina Burana presents a decidedly bleak and medieval world view — one of intense loneliness, spiritual vacuity, unslaked longing and a kind of compulsive desperation in pursuit of salubrious pleasures. Muti has long experience with Carmina Burana, most famously leading a Berlin Philharmonic performance in in the presence of the year-old composer.
